Thank you for choosing to adopt! Please read through the following information to find out more about how our adoption process works.

APPLICATION

The Virginia Paws for Pits adoption application is the first step to our process. Please answer all questions on the form as detailed as possible. Doing so will help us determine if the dog you're applying for is the right match for you, or, which dog may be the best fit for your family and lifestyle. Once you submit your application, you can expect to hear from a VPFP board member within a few days.

HOME VISIT/INTERVIEW

Once your adoption application has been approved, we will schedule your home visit. During this part of the process, a VPFP team member will come to your home to see where your new dog will be living, point out any potential hazards, and further address any questions you may have. The home visit is not a "white glove" test by any means. It is merely a good way for us to get to know you better while passing along some of our breed expertise to help ensure the easiest transition possible for your newest (and current) family members.

ADOPTION

CONTRACT/ADOPTION FEE

Once both your application and home check have been completed, you will be all set for adoption! When the time comes to officially adopt your new dog, we will go over our adoption contract and collect his/her adoption fee.

Fees vary by puppy/dog/cat/kitten based on several factors.  Please contact us for more information.

Adoption fees include all age appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter (for dogs over 4 months old), and micro-chipping. For young puppies/kittens under 4 months old, that have not yet been spayed or neutered, we will apply a $50 credit once you provide proof of spay/neuter by the age of 6 months old. All dogs over the age of 4 months will be spayed/neutered by Virginia Paws for Pits prior to adoption.

IT IS A REQUIREMENT THAT YOUR PET BE SPAYED/NEUTERED BY THE AGE OF 6 MONTHS. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO RECLAIM OWNERSHIP IMMEDIATELY OF ANY ANIMAL THAT HAS NOT BEEN SPAYED/NEUTERED IN THE GIVEN TIME FRAME.

DEPOSIT

Adoption deposits are not required, but may be placed if you choose to do so. This will put a temporary hold on the dog/cat of your choosing; meaning we will prioritize your application before pursuing any others interested in the same pet. If you decide to place a deposit prior to adoption approval, please note that the deposit does not guarantee placement with your family.

Deposits are NON-REFUNDABLE unless the applicant is denied. Deposits may be placed in the amount of half of the regular adoption fee. The remainder of the adoption fee will be due at the time of or prior to finalizing the adoption contract. Deposits can be placed through PayPal using our email address, VPFPRescue@gmail.com. Please be sure to note which dog/cat the deposit is for.

ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS

All applicants are expected to be prepared to care for their adopted pet for their ENTIRE lifetime. This means a commitment to providing food, supplies, basic comfort/toys, preventative/emergency vet care, love, and attention. We try very hard to ensure that all of our dogs  and cats will be adopted into "forever" homes, but you are the one that will ultimately be responsible for providing them with the above. Moving, marriage, having children, changing jobs, and "just not having adequate time" for your pet are not reasons to return an animal you pledged dedication to. If any of these things may be in your future, please make sure you already have a plan in place to not let them down, and/or strongly reconsider your decision to purse adoption at this time.

Fenced yards are not necessarily required for approval though that is preferred. If you do not have a fenced in yard or secure outdoor space, please have consider how you will provide your new dog with adequate exercise while keeping them safe.

If you currently have other animals in the home, they must be spayed/neutered and current on vaccinations prior to your adoption approval, no exceptions.
